Abstract long parallel sweep illustration in green and pale sage on white — decorative header for RTK Robot Mowers for Large Lawns Compared

RTK robot mowers for large lawns

Satellite correction is what makes a half-acre-plus lawn practical to mow in straight lines without a boundary wire.

Every figure here is taken from the manufacturer’s published listing and measured against the rest of the group. We do not test robot mowers. Where a listing is silent on a specification, this site prints not stated rather than a plausible default.

What this group looks like

Computed across the 13 matching listings.
Measure Middle half Median
Rated lawn area 32,670 sq ft – 1 acre 39,204 sq ft
Cutting width 8.7 in – 14 in 8.7 in
Claim density (sq ft per cm of deck) 986 – 1,954 1,628

The middle-half column spans the 25th to 75th percentile, so it describes where most of this group sits rather than being pulled about by one unusual machine. Claim density is this site’s own figure, not a manufacturer’s: rated area divided by cutting width. It is not a quality score — it says how much lawn a machine is claimed to cover for the width it actually cuts, and a high figure means the rating leans on run time rather than on a faster cut.

Against the market as a whole this group claims more lawn per centimetre of deck than average — a median of 1,628 square feet per centimetre against 536 overall, a difference of 204%. That is a property of the lawn size and technology these machines are built for, not of any particular brand.

What these listings publish

Specification coverage is uneven, and knowing where it runs out is part of shopping honestly. A missing figure does not mean a worse mower — it means a less completely described one — but it does mean you cannot compare on that axis without going to the manufacturer.

Bands, not prices. A price captured when the data was collected is wrong by the time you read it; the figure shown at checkout is the one that applies.

Why RTK dominates at this size

Across a large open lawn the cost of a wire rises with the perimeter while the benefit of centimetre positioning rises with the area. Straight parallel passes matter more too: a mower working in a random pattern covers a big lawn far less efficiently than one that knows exactly which strip it has already cut. That is the whole argument for satellite correction, and it is why this combination is the most common on the site.

The reference antenna decides whether it works

The correction is only as good as the fixed station’s own view of the sky and its radio link back to the mower. Across a large plot that link has to reach the far corner, and a house wall or a run of mature trees between the two is a real constraint. Siting the antenna high and central matters more on a big lawn than on a small one.

Satellite correction needs sky, and siting decides it

An RTK system uses a fixed reference receiver to correct the mower’s satellite position to centimetre accuracy, and that reference needs a clear view of open sky. Under an eave, beside a wall or below a tree line it produces a poor correction and the mower wanders or refuses to start. This is the most common installation problem in the class and it is a siting problem rather than a product one, which is why two identical mowers can perform very differently in adjacent gardens.

Why this technology suits large open ground

On a big lawn with few landmarks, cameras have little to fix against and laser has nothing to range from — which is precisely where satellite correction is at its best, because it does not need the garden to look like anything. The trade is trees: a mature canopy blocks the sky the system depends on, and a large garden with heavy planting is the case where RTK struggles and the other methods do not.

Coverage figures assume open ground

A stated area rating is measured on continuous lawn, and an acre broken up by beds, trees and a drive is a substantially harder problem than an acre of open grass. At this size the specification that decides the outcome is usually the navigation technology and the number of no-go zones the software supports, rather than the headline area. Where the property is complex rather than merely large, the coverage figure is the least useful number on the listing.

Blades, and the cost of an acre

Blade replacement scales with grass cut, so a mower covering this much ground reaches the frequent end of the replacement interval. The annual cost stays small and the availability question matters more: a proprietary blade pattern from a manufacturer that leaves the market turns a cheap consumable into a reason to replace the mower. A standard pattern available from several suppliers is worth preferring on a machine expected to run for years.

Before you buy

Measure the grass, not the plot

A quarter-acre lot with a house, a drive and planting on it is often well under 5,000 square feet of actual lawn. Buyers who size from the deed rather than the turf pay for coverage they will never use, and buyers who forget the side return discover the shortfall in May.

Count the sections, not just the area

A rated area assumes an open expanse. A lawn split into front, back and side sections costs travel and re-localisation time the rating never accounted for, and it is the most common reason a correctly sized mower never seems to finish. Where a garden is genuinely fragmented, size up rather than matching the rating exactly.

Treat marketing language as a claim, not a specification

Where a phrase on a listing matters to your decision, look for the number behind it: a rated grade rather than a sentence about hills, a stated cutting height rather than a description of versatility. Where this site could not find that number, it says not stated rather than inferring one.

Compare them

The finder below is already filtered to this group. Widen or narrow it from there — every result is measured against the median for its own lawn-size class.

Your requirements

How big is the lawn?

Measure the grass, not the plot. A quarter-acre lot with a house, drive and beds on it is often well under 5,000 sq ft of actual lawn.

What can you spend?

A ceiling, not a band — each option includes everything cheaper. We show price bands rather than exact prices, because a price captured on a scrape date is wrong by the time you read it.

Will you bury a boundary wire?

A perimeter wire is pegged or buried around every edge and bed, and it is the part of the install people underestimate. Wire-free mowers map the lawn with satellites or cameras instead, and cost more.

How short do you cut?

Cool-season grass is usually happy at 30-40 mm. Warm-season turf such as St. Augustine wants 60 mm or more, and very few robot mowers reach it.

The lawn has steep sections

Banks and slopes are where robot mowers get stuck. This shows only mowers sold with all-wheel drive or a rated grade of 45% or more.
