Abstract balanced quartered field illustration in green and pale sage on white — decorative header for Robot Mowers for a Half Acre Compared

Robot mowers for a quarter to half an acre

The standard suburban lawn, and the size band where this market is thickest and the machines are hardest to tell apart.

Every figure here is taken from the manufacturer’s published listing and measured against the rest of the group. We do not test robot mowers. Where a listing is silent on a specification, this site prints not stated rather than a plausible default.

What this group looks like

Computed across the 28 matching listings.
Measure Middle half Median
Rated lawn area 10,890 sq ft – 16,117 sq ft 10,890 sq ft
Cutting width 7.9 in – 8.7 in 8.7 in
Claim density (sq ft per cm of deck) 493 – 643 543

The middle-half column spans the 25th to 75th percentile, so it describes where most of this group sits rather than being pulled about by one unusual machine. Claim density is this site’s own figure, not a manufacturer’s: rated area divided by cutting width. It is not a quality score — it says how much lawn a machine is claimed to cover for the width it actually cuts, and a high figure means the rating leans on run time rather than on a faster cut.

Against the market as a whole this group claims about as much lawn per centimetre of deck as average — a median of 543 square feet per centimetre against 536 overall. That is a property of the lawn size and technology these machines are built for, not of any particular brand.

What these listings publish

Specification coverage is uneven, and knowing where it runs out is part of shopping honestly. A missing figure does not mean a worse mower — it means a less completely described one — but it does mean you cannot compare on that axis without going to the manufacturer.

What they cost

Bands, not prices. A price captured when the data was collected is wrong by the time you read it; the figure shown at checkout is the one that applies.

The most crowded band on the site

More listings target this size than any other, which means the spread between a well-engineered machine and an optimistically rated one is wide and easy to miss — every one of them looks much the same in a listing photograph. The claim density figure in the table below is the fastest way to see which ratings lean on run time.

Fragmentation costs more than area does

A half acre in one open shape and a half acre split into a front lawn, a back lawn and a side return are very different jobs. The second costs travel time and re-localisation the rating never accounted for, and it is the most common reason a correctly sized mower never seems to finish. Where the garden is genuinely in pieces, size up.

Where a boundary wire still competes

At this size a wire is a day’s work rather than a weekend’s, and the machines that use one are markedly cheaper. If the garden is stable and you are not planning to redesign the beds, it remains a reasonable trade — the premium for wire-free buys convenience, not a better cut.

This size sits between two design points

Half an acre falls between the mid-range machines built for a typical suburban lawn and the large ones built for a paddock. Buying up into the larger class brings a wider deck, a bigger battery and a higher price; staying in the mid-range means more hours running to cover the same ground. Neither is wrong, and the deciding factor is usually whether the mower can finish overnight, because a machine still working at nine in the morning is one the household notices.

Cutting width does more work than battery life

A wider deck covers more ground per pass, and the effect compounds across a large area: a modest increase in width takes a meaningful bite out of total run time. Battery capacity gets the marketing attention because it is a single impressive number, but a mower that recharges automatically and resumes is limited by how fast it cuts rather than by how long it runs between charges. Deck width is the specification to compare first at this size.

Zones, and gardens that are not one shape

Half an acre is frequently not one lawn — it is a front, a back and something around the side, separated by paths or gates. Whether the mower can be told about separate zones, and whether it can cross between them unaided, decides whether one machine covers the property or whether it has to be carried. This is a software capability rather than a hardware one and it is described inconsistently across listings, so it is worth confirming directly.

Charging time is part of the coverage figure

A stated coverage area assumes the mower can complete its cycle within the mowing window, and that includes the hours it spends on the base recharging. A machine with a long charge and a short run does the same total work in more elapsed time, which matters when the window is overnight. Where two mowers quote similar coverage, the one that recharges faster finishes sooner, and the charge figure is stated less often than the run time.

Before you buy

Measure the grass, not the plot

A quarter-acre lot with a house, a drive and planting on it is often well under 5,000 square feet of actual lawn. Buyers who size from the deed rather than the turf pay for coverage they will never use, and buyers who forget the side return discover the shortfall in May.

Count the sections, not just the area

A rated area assumes an open expanse. A lawn split into front, back and side sections costs travel and re-localisation time the rating never accounted for, and it is the most common reason a correctly sized mower never seems to finish. Where a garden is genuinely fragmented, size up rather than matching the rating exactly.

Treat marketing language as a claim, not a specification

Where a phrase on a listing matters to your decision, look for the number behind it: a rated grade rather than a sentence about hills, a stated cutting height rather than a description of versatility. Where this site could not find that number, it says not stated rather than inferring one.

Compare them

The finder below is already filtered to this group. Widen or narrow it from there — every result is measured against the median for its own lawn-size class.

Your requirements

How big is the lawn?

Measure the grass, not the plot. A quarter-acre lot with a house, drive and beds on it is often well under 5,000 sq ft of actual lawn.

What can you spend?

A ceiling, not a band — each option includes everything cheaper. We show price bands rather than exact prices, because a price captured on a scrape date is wrong by the time you read it.

Will you bury a boundary wire?

A perimeter wire is pegged or buried around every edge and bed, and it is the part of the install people underestimate. Wire-free mowers map the lawn with satellites or cameras instead, and cost more.

How short do you cut?

Cool-season grass is usually happy at 30-40 mm. Warm-season turf such as St. Augustine wants 60 mm or more, and very few robot mowers reach it.

The lawn has steep sections

Banks and slopes are where robot mowers get stuck. This shows only mowers sold with all-wheel drive or a rated grade of 45% or more.
