Robot mowers for an acre and above
Past about half an acre the machines change: wider decks, satellite navigation as standard, and prices that overlap ride-on mowers.
Every figure here is taken from the manufacturer’s published listing and measured against the rest of the group. We do not test robot mowers. Where a listing is silent on a specification, this site prints not stated rather than a plausible default.
What this group looks like
| Measure | Middle half | Median |
|---|---|---|
| Rated lawn area | 21,780 sq ft – 1 acre | 32,670 sq ft |
| Cutting width | 8.7 in – 15.7 in | 11.8 in |
| Claim density (sq ft per cm of deck) | 919 – 1,854 | 1,169 |
The middle-half column spans the 25th to 75th percentile, so it describes where most of this group sits rather than being pulled about by one unusual machine. Claim density is this site’s own figure, not a manufacturer’s: rated area divided by cutting width. It is not a quality score — it says how much lawn a machine is claimed to cover for the width it actually cuts, and a high figure means the rating leans on run time rather than on a faster cut.
Against the market as a whole this group claims more lawn per centimetre of deck than average — a median of 1,169 square feet per centimetre against 536 overall, a difference of 118%. That is a property of the lawn size and technology these machines are built for, not of any particular brand.
What these listings publish
Specification coverage is uneven, and knowing where it runs out is part of shopping honestly. A missing figure does not mean a worse mower — it means a less completely described one — but it does mean you cannot compare on that axis without going to the manufacturer.
| Specification | Stated | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Rated lawn area | 27 | 100% |
| Cutting width | 27 | 100% |
| Lowest cutting height | 24 | 89% |
| Boundary system | 20 | 74% |
| Rated slope | 16 | 59% |
What they cost
Bands, not prices. A price captured when the data was collected is wrong by the time you read it; the figure shown at checkout is the one that applies.
| Band | Listings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| $600–1,000 | 4 | 15% |
| $1,000–2,000 | 9 | 33% |
| $2,000–3,500 | 12 | 44% |
| Over $3,500 | 2 | 7% |
Deck width starts to decide everything
On a small lawn a mower has hours of slack. At an acre it does not, and the cut width becomes the term that actually sets whether a schedule completes. A machine claiming an acre on a 20 cm deck is claiming a great many hours of running, which is exactly what the claim density figure below makes visible.
Run time and charging behaviour, not battery size
What matters at this scale is the fraction of the day the mower spends cutting rather than charging, and how intelligently it returns to the dock and resumes where it stopped. Battery capacity on its own tells you almost nothing, and it is the figure listings publish most readily.
Compare against the alternative honestly
At the top of this band the price overlaps a ride-on. A robot mows continuously and unattended and mulches as it goes; a ride-on does the whole lawn in an afternoon you have to spend. Which is better depends on whether your constraint is time or money, and no specification answers it.
At this size the machine is genuinely large
Mowers rated for an acre sit at the top of this corpus on every physical dimension — deck width, weight and price. They are heavy enough that moving one for maintenance is a two-person job on anything but flat ground, and their storage over winter needs real space. None of that appears in a comparison of coverage figures, and all of it decides how the thing fits into a household.
Boundary complexity, not area, is what defeats them
An acre of open grass is an easy problem: the mower runs long, straight passes and the coverage figure means what it says. An acre broken up by beds, trees, a pond and a gravel drive is a much harder one, and the coverage rating assumes the former. Where the property is complex rather than merely large, the specification that matters is the navigation technology and the number of no-go zones the software supports, not the headline area.
Rain, and mowing on a schedule that ignores it
A machine covering this much ground runs most days, which means it runs in weather. Rain sensors that send the mower home sound sensible and mean the lawn falls behind during a wet week, then gets cut long. Mowers that continue in light rain keep to schedule and mark soft ground with their wheels. Neither behaviour is right for every garden, and which one a mower does is worth knowing before the first wet fortnight.
Blades, and the running cost nobody quotes
Robot mowers cut with small pivoting razor blades rather than a rotating bar, and they are consumables replaced every one to three months depending on how much grass passes them. On an acre that is the top of that range, and the annual cost is small but real and appears on no listing. Blades are cheap; the thing worth checking before buying is whether they are a standard pattern available from anyone, or a proprietary shape available only from the manufacturer.
Before you buy
Measure the grass, not the plot
A quarter-acre lot with a house, a drive and planting on it is often well under 5,000 square feet of actual lawn. Buyers who size from the deed rather than the turf pay for coverage they will never use, and buyers who forget the side return discover the shortfall in May.
Count the sections, not just the area
A rated area assumes an open expanse. A lawn split into front, back and side sections costs travel and re-localisation time the rating never accounted for, and it is the most common reason a correctly sized mower never seems to finish. Where a garden is genuinely fragmented, size up rather than matching the rating exactly.
Treat marketing language as a claim, not a specification
Where a phrase on a listing matters to your decision, look for the number behind it: a rated grade rather than a sentence about hills, a stated cutting height rather than a description of versatility. Where this site could not find that number, it says not stated rather than inferring one.
