Robot mowers under $1,000
What the affordable end of this market actually offers, measured rather than assumed. It cuts across every navigation technology.
Every figure here is taken from the manufacturer’s published listing and measured against the rest of the group. We do not test robot mowers. Where a listing is silent on a specification, this site prints not stated rather than a plausible default.
What this group looks like
| Measure | Middle half | Median |
|---|---|---|
| Rated lawn area | 5,445 sq ft – 10,890 sq ft | 8,611 sq ft |
| Cutting width | 7.1 in – 8.7 in | 7.9 in |
| Claim density (sq ft per cm of deck) | 271 – 538 | 408 |
The middle-half column spans the 25th to 75th percentile, so it describes where most of this group sits rather than being pulled about by one unusual machine. Claim density is this site’s own figure, not a manufacturer’s: rated area divided by cutting width. It is not a quality score — it says how much lawn a machine is claimed to cover for the width it actually cuts, and a high figure means the rating leans on run time rather than on a faster cut.
Against the market as a whole this group claims less lawn per centimetre of deck than average — a median of 408 square feet per centimetre against 536 overall, a difference of 24%. That is a property of the lawn size and technology these machines are built for, not of any particular brand.
What these listings publish
Specification coverage is uneven, and knowing where it runs out is part of shopping honestly. A missing figure does not mean a worse mower — it means a less completely described one — but it does mean you cannot compare on that axis without going to the manufacturer.
| Specification | Stated | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Rated lawn area | 52 | 96% |
| Cutting width | 52 | 96% |
| Lowest cutting height | 40 | 74% |
| Boundary system | 40 | 74% |
| Rated slope | 20 | 37% |
What they cost
Bands, not prices. A price captured when the data was collected is wrong by the time you read it; the figure shown at checkout is the one that applies.
| Band | Listings | Share |

| Under $600 | 25 | 46% |
| $600–1,000 | 29 | 54% |
What the money buys, and what it does not
Below a thousand dollars the mower is nearly always sized for a small to medium lawn and navigates by camera or by perimeter wire rather than by satellite correction. That is a coherent product rather than a compromised one — for a single open garden under a quarter acre it is the sensible buy, and the premium above it goes on coverage and on navigating conditions this class cannot.
Where the saving is a false economy
A large, fragmented or heavily shaded garden is where the cheap end fails, and it fails by never quite finishing rather than by breaking. If the lawn is over about a quarter acre, or split into sections, the machines on this page are the wrong tool and the price is not the relevant variable.
Bands, because prices move
This page groups by price band rather than printing figures. A price captured when the data was collected is wrong by the time you read it, and the number shown at checkout is the only one that applies.
Price bands, not prices
This site does not publish exact prices. Prices change daily and a figure captured on a scrape date is misleading by the time you read it — the price shown by the retailer when you buy is the only one that applies. What can be said reliably is which band a mower sits in and what that band typically buys, which is what this page compares.
What this budget actually reaches
A little over half the mowers in this corpus sit at or below this level, so this is not a fringe of the market — it is most of it. What the band tends to include is coverage suited to a typical suburban lawn and navigation that is competent on open ground. What it tends to exclude is all-wheel drive, the largest decks, and the more sophisticated obstacle handling. Those are the three places the money goes further up, and only the first of them matters on a flat lawn.
Where saving money costs more later
The specifications least likely to be stated at this end are slope capability and, on wire-free models, what the mower does when it loses its fix. Both are the specifications that decide whether the machine works on a particular garden rather than how well it works. A mower bought cheaply for a sloping or heavily shaded garden is the one that ends up unused, and the listing gave no figure that would have predicted it.
What the cheapest band is genuinely good at
A flat, open, rectangular lawn of ordinary suburban size is the case this band was built for, and on that garden a mower here will do the job as well as one costing three times more. The premium further up buys capability for gardens that are steep, complex, shaded or very large. Where none of those apply, spending more buys refinement rather than function — which is the opposite of the impression the range gives.
Before you buy
Measure the grass, not the plot
A quarter-acre lot with a house, a drive and planting on it is often well under 5,000 square feet of actual lawn. Buyers who size from the deed rather than the turf pay for coverage they will never use, and buyers who forget the side return discover the shortfall in May.
Count the sections, not just the area
A rated area assumes an open expanse. A lawn split into front, back and side sections costs travel and re-localisation time the rating never accounted for, and it is the most common reason a correctly sized mower never seems to finish. Where a garden is genuinely fragmented, size up rather than matching the rating exactly.
Treat marketing language as a claim, not a specification
Where a phrase on a listing matters to your decision, look for the number behind it: a rated grade rather than a sentence about hills, a stated cutting height rather than a description of versatility. Where this site could not find that number, it says not stated rather than inferring one.
