Robot mowers for small yards, under a quarter acre
Under about 10,000 square feet the constraint stops being coverage and starts being how well a machine handles a garden full of edges.
Every figure here is taken from the manufacturer’s published listing and measured against the rest of the group. We do not test robot mowers. Where a listing is silent on a specification, this site prints not stated rather than a plausible default.
What this group looks like
| Measure | Middle half | Median |
|---|---|---|
| Rated lawn area | 4,000 sq ft – 6,534 sq ft | 5,445 sq ft |
| Cutting width | 7 in – 7.9 in | 7.9 in |
| Claim density (sq ft per cm of deck) | 157 – 326 | 272 |
The middle-half column spans the 25th to 75th percentile, so it describes where most of this group sits rather than being pulled about by one unusual machine. Claim density is this site’s own figure, not a manufacturer’s: rated area divided by cutting width. It is not a quality score — it says how much lawn a machine is claimed to cover for the width it actually cuts, and a high figure means the rating leans on run time rather than on a faster cut.
Against the market as a whole this group claims less lawn per centimetre of deck than average — a median of 272 square feet per centimetre against 536 overall, a difference of 49%. That is a property of the lawn size and technology these machines are built for, not of any particular brand.
What these listings publish
Specification coverage is uneven, and knowing where it runs out is part of shopping honestly. A missing figure does not mean a worse mower — it means a less completely described one — but it does mean you cannot compare on that axis without going to the manufacturer.
| Specification | Stated | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Rated lawn area | 32 | 100% |
| Cutting width | 31 | 97% |
| Lowest cutting height | 20 | 63% |
| Boundary system | 26 | 81% |
| Rated slope | 10 | 31% |
What they cost
Bands, not prices. A price captured when the data was collected is wrong by the time you read it; the figure shown at checkout is the one that applies.
| Band | Listings | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Under $600 | 23 | 72% |
| $600–1,000 | 7 | 22% |
| $1,000–2,000 | 1 | 3% |
| $2,000–3,500 | 1 | 3% |
Coverage is the specification that matters least here
Almost every mower on this page will finish a small lawn comfortably inside its schedule, so the rated area tells you very little. What separates them is behaviour at edges and around obstacles — a small garden is mostly edge, and a machine that leaves a hand-trimmed margin around every bed has not saved you the job.
A narrow deck is not a disadvantage at this size
On a large lawn a wider cut is straightforwardly faster. On a small one the mower has time in hand regardless, and a narrower machine turns in tighter spaces and passes through gate gaps and side returns a wide one cannot. Check the width in the table below against the narrowest point it has to get through.
This is where camera navigation makes most sense
Vision-only mowers accumulate positional error over distance, which is what keeps them out of the large-lawn categories. Across a small, well-defined garden that limit rarely binds, and the saving against a satellite-corrected machine is substantial.
The smallest machines are a different class of hardware
Mowers in the smallest bands here have narrower cutting decks and lower stated slope figures than the rest of the corpus, and both follow from size. A narrow deck takes more passes to cover the same ground, which is fine when the ground is small. The lower slope rating is the one worth checking against the garden, because a small lawn on a bank is a harder problem than a large flat one and the machines built for small lawns are not the ones built for banks.
Coverage figures are ceilings, not targets
A stated coverage area assumes an open rectangle and a full battery cycle. A real small garden has beds, a path, a washing line and a tree, and each of those costs coverage — the mower spends time navigating rather than cutting. Buying a machine rated for exactly the lawn’s area leaves no margin for its shape, and shape matters far more proportionally in a small garden than in a large one.
Where a robot stops making sense
On a genuinely small, simple lawn a robot mower is competing against ten minutes with a push mower, and the honest comparison includes the setup, the charging base, the winter storage and the cable. The case for automating strengthens with awkwardness rather than with size: a small lawn split into three sections by paths is a better candidate than a slightly larger open one. This page can compare the machines and cannot answer whether the machine is worth having.
Obstacles cost more here than anywhere
A trampoline, a sandpit or a dog’s water bowl occupies a fixed area, and in a small garden that is a large fraction of the total. Mowers that detect and route around objects reliably lose less ground than ones that bump and turn, and in a small space the difference is visible in how well the edges get cut. This is where obstacle handling earns its place, rather than on the open lawns where it is usually marketed.
Before you buy
Measure the grass, not the plot
A quarter-acre lot with a house, a drive and planting on it is often well under 5,000 square feet of actual lawn. Buyers who size from the deed rather than the turf pay for coverage they will never use, and buyers who forget the side return discover the shortfall in May.
Count the sections, not just the area
A rated area assumes an open expanse. A lawn split into front, back and side sections costs travel and re-localisation time the rating never accounted for, and it is the most common reason a correctly sized mower never seems to finish. Where a garden is genuinely fragmented, size up rather than matching the rating exactly.
Treat marketing language as a claim, not a specification
Where a phrase on a listing matters to your decision, look for the number behind it: a rated grade rather than a sentence about hills, a stated cutting height rather than a description of versatility. Where this site could not find that number, it says not stated rather than inferring one.
