Abstract rising diagonal mass illustration in green and pale sage on white — decorative header for Robot Mowers for Slopes Compared on Specs

Robot mowers for slopes and banks

Slopes are where robot mowers get stuck. Every machine here is sold with all-wheel drive or a rated grade of 45% or more.

Every figure here is taken from the manufacturer’s published listing and measured against the rest of the group. We do not test robot mowers. Where a listing is silent on a specification, this site prints not stated rather than a plausible default.

What this group looks like

Computed across the 40 matching listings.
Measure Middle half Median
Rated lawn area 10,890 sq ft – 32,670 sq ft 21,780 sq ft
Cutting width 8.7 in – 15.7 in 9.5 in
Claim density (sq ft per cm of deck) 538 – 986 803

The middle-half column spans the 25th to 75th percentile, so it describes where most of this group sits rather than being pulled about by one unusual machine. Claim density is this site’s own figure, not a manufacturer’s: rated area divided by cutting width. It is not a quality score — it says how much lawn a machine is claimed to cover for the width it actually cuts, and a high figure means the rating leans on run time rather than on a faster cut.

Against the market as a whole this group claims more lawn per centimetre of deck than average — a median of 803 square feet per centimetre against 536 overall, a difference of 50%. That is a property of the lawn size and technology these machines are built for, not of any particular brand.

What these listings publish

Specification coverage is uneven, and knowing where it runs out is part of shopping honestly. A missing figure does not mean a worse mower — it means a less completely described one — but it does mean you cannot compare on that axis without going to the manufacturer.

What they cost

Bands, not prices. A price captured when the data was collected is wrong by the time you read it; the figure shown at checkout is the one that applies.

Band Listings Share
$600–1,000 11 28%
$1,000–2,000 15 38%
$2,000–3,500 13 33%
Over $3,500 1 3%

Read the percentage, not the adjective

A slope stated as a percentage is rise over run, so 45% is a little over 24 degrees and 80% is close to 39. The figure is measured on dry grass in a straight line up the fall line, which is the easiest case there is. Wet grass halves the available traction, a turn taken across the slope loads two wheels instead of four, and a bank at the very edge of the cutting area asks the machine to work at its limit while also trying to locate itself. Treat the rating as a ceiling.

All-wheel drive earns its cost here and nowhere else

On flat lawn, four driven wheels buy very little for the weight and price they add. On a bank they are the difference between mowing and winching, because they keep torque on the ground when weight transfers off the uphill wheels. This is the one category where the AWD premium is straightforwardly justified.

What a rating does not cover

No listing states performance on wet grass, and none state what happens when the mower has to turn on the slope rather than climb it. Where the manufacturer publishes only a headline grade, this site records that and nothing more.

All-wheel drive is the specification that decides this

Roughly a quarter of the mowers here have all-wheel drive, and their median stated slope capability is close to double that of the corpus as a whole. That is the clearest single split in the data on this site: if the garden has a real bank, AWD is not a refinement, it is the feature. Two-wheel-drive machines manage gentle inclines competently and lose traction on wet grass well before their rated figure.

Only half these listings state a slope figure at all

Slope capability is published on fewer than half the mowers in this corpus, which makes it one of the least-stated specifications on the site and the most consequential for this page. Where it is absent, the honest reading is that the manufacturer did not want to commit, and a mower without a stated figure should be assumed to be ordinary rather than capable. This page compares the ones that publish; it cannot rank the ones that do not.

Percent and degrees are not the same number

Slope is quoted both ways and the two are frequently confused: a forty-five per cent slope is about twenty-four degrees, not forty-five. A listing quoting a large-sounding percentage may be describing a gentler bank than a modest-sounding degree figure. Converting both to the same unit before comparing is the difference between a fair comparison and an accidental one, and the mistake usually runs in the direction of overestimating what a mower will manage.

Wet grass is the real test

Published slope ratings are measured on dry grass with good traction, and a robot mower does most of its work early in the morning on dew. The practical margin is therefore smaller than the number suggests, and the failure — a mower stuck at the bottom of a bank with wheels spinning — is one that damages the lawn as well as the schedule. Buying a machine rated well above the actual gradient is the sensible hedge, and it is the reason AWD matters on slopes that look manageable.

Before you buy

Measure the grass, not the plot

A quarter-acre lot with a house, a drive and planting on it is often well under 5,000 square feet of actual lawn. Buyers who size from the deed rather than the turf pay for coverage they will never use, and buyers who forget the side return discover the shortfall in May.

Count the sections, not just the area

A rated area assumes an open expanse. A lawn split into front, back and side sections costs travel and re-localisation time the rating never accounted for, and it is the most common reason a correctly sized mower never seems to finish. Where a garden is genuinely fragmented, size up rather than matching the rating exactly.

Treat marketing language as a claim, not a specification

Where a phrase on a listing matters to your decision, look for the number behind it: a rated grade rather than a sentence about hills, a stated cutting height rather than a description of versatility. Where this site could not find that number, it says not stated rather than inferring one.

Compare them

The finder below is already filtered to this group. Widen or narrow it from there — every result is measured against the median for its own lawn-size class.

Your requirements

How big is the lawn?

Measure the grass, not the plot. A quarter-acre lot with a house, drive and beds on it is often well under 5,000 sq ft of actual lawn.

What can you spend?

A ceiling, not a band — each option includes everything cheaper. We show price bands rather than exact prices, because a price captured on a scrape date is wrong by the time you read it.

Will you bury a boundary wire?

A perimeter wire is pegged or buried around every edge and bed, and it is the part of the install people underestimate. Wire-free mowers map the lawn with satellites or cameras instead, and cost more.

How short do you cut?

Cool-season grass is usually happy at 30-40 mm. Warm-season turf such as St. Augustine wants 60 mm or more, and very few robot mowers reach it.

The lawn has steep sections

Banks and slopes are where robot mowers get stuck. This shows only mowers sold with all-wheel drive or a rated grade of 45% or more.
